Synchronised Swimming is a women’s sport in Olympic and is also known as water ballet or pattern swimming. Synchronised Swimming is a woman’s only sport at the Olympic level, was an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games from 1948 to 1968, then became a full-fledged Summer Olympic sport in 1984. At the 1984, 1988, and 1992 games there were solo and duet events. In 1996, only a team event was held. Since 2000, a team event and a duet event have been held. Synchronised Swimming is governed internationally by FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation).
Two events are currently recognized internationally in Olympic synchronized swimming, duet and team (eight swimmers). Within each of those events are two routines, a technical and a free routine. The same swimmers might perform in both team and duet events.
Rules for Team Event
• A team consists of 8 members.
• One alternate swimmer
• In Technical Routine Perform a set routine of specific moves in a specific order.
o 2:50 time limit ( + or -15 seconds)
• Free Routine Perform a self-choreographed routine with no specific requirements
o 4:00 time limit ( + or -15 seconds)
Rules for Duet Event
• Two swimmers
• One alternate swimmer
• In Technical Routine Perform a set routine of specific moves in a specific order.
o 2:20 time limit ( + or -15 seconds)
o Perform a set routine of specific moves in a specific order
• Free Routine Perform a self-choreographed routine with no specific requirements
o 3:30 time limit ( + or -15 seconds)
