Synchronised Swimming is a women’s only sport at the Olympic level. Synchronised Swimming was an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games from 1948 to 1968 and then became a matured Summer Olympic sport in 1984. At the 1984, 1988, and 1992 games there were solo and duet events. In 1996, only a team event was held. Since 2000, a team event and a duet event have been held. Synchronised Swimming is governed internationally by FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation).
Synchronized swimming has been contested at the Summer Olympics since the 1984 Games. The current Olympic program has competition in duet and team events, but in past games, a solo event was also contested. In Olympic Synchronized swimming the United States, Canada and Japan have been the strongest nations conventionally, winning every Olympic medal from 1984 through 1996. But now newly dominated Russia has winning every event in 2000, 2004 and 2008.
